PROOF OF CONSTRUCTION: RELIABILITY SAVAL CFI RIM SEAL SYSTEM
CFI RIM SEAL SYSTEMS
Since 1999 Saval manufactures automatic RIM seal detection and extinguishing systems for storage tanks. This special application is called: CFI rim seal system and is based on extinguishing using the special CF3I extinguishing gas as a first attack system.
For storage tanks with floating roofs the flexible outskirt (RIM seal) is the area where vapors can occur. Vapors are an important and possible fire hazard when sparks or lightning strikes occur in this ATEX zone ‘0’. Saval protects thousands of floating roof tanks against RIM seal fires with the CFI rim seal systems. These systems are maintenance free with a total lifespan of 30 years.
20 YEARS OLD SYSTEMS
Recently two tanks, equipped with CFI rim seal systems in 2000, were dismantled after the realization of a new tank terminal. After almost 20 years the Saval detection and extinguishing systems are still working and in good condition.
Combined level and pressure control of these systems guaranteed reliable functioning as accessibility of the two tank roofs during operation was not allowed. Consequently, no maintenance or cleaning activity on the CFI rim seal systems was executed during the 20 years of continuous operation, also no repairs or modifications were required.
Laboratory tests including controlled activation for the different components show no deterioration of the stainless-steel glassbulb activation sprayers, the stainless-steel tubing nor the vessel.
This excellent proof of concept of the robustness of CFI rim seal systems underline the fact that they can withstand severe environment on top of storage tanks in all weather conditions without maintenance.
